The most famous tourist atraction in Casabermeja is definitely the San Sebastian Cemetery. It is very unique in Spain, and sits on the edge of the village in top of a hill, seen beautifully from the A45  highway. It was declared to be of Historic and Artistic value in 1980. It looks like a miniature city of the dead, with alleys resembling streets, tombs and mausoleums , buildings.

A central, large  monument situated in the middle echoes San Sebastian church of the village. The wall recesses of the tombstones are made of three parts: the niche for the dead, the gravestone and the decorative facade. This is the reason why many think that the dead are buried standing up, and that’s why Casabermeja is well known in whole Spain for burying its people “standing”. Of course, this is not true, but try to keep infamous rumors under control …

November 1st, All Saints Day, it is an important celebration for locals who whitewash the vaults and graves, add flowers to them, and light up candles for the dead. The candle lit night is completed with live classical concerts in the little chapel. Because of its authenticity this cemetery is a favorite subject for passing  tourists and not only.

I a quite weird contest, this cemetery has been voted the second most beautiful cemetery in entire Spain. And yes indeed, one could understand why it is so. Its structure, its decorated facades and its intriguing charm are inviting to come – and to stay. As one of the local writers put it: “Casabermeja is a good place to live, but an even better one to die!”.
