Prehistoric cave paintings in Peñas de Cabreras
Prehistoric cave paintings are always spectacular and impressive. One of the most amazing places you can visit here in our village are the rupestral drawings “Penas de Cabreras”. We heard about this prehistoric site for few years but never made time to go and look for it. I’m happy we didn’t because we would have never found it on our own. With the occasion of the village’s Country Style Cooking Days the township organised a walking guided tour to the place, and accompanied by 2 of our dogs we had an amazing morning walk.
After more than an hour of walking along the Gudalmedina river, crossing bright emerald green fields and newly trimmed olive tree orchards we found ourselves on a rocky platform with many holes and coats dug naturally by wind and weather into siliceous hard and compact sandstone. Now this, was an amazing sight.
Discovered in 1973 by a goat man, the site has 75 holes of which 29 are inventoried. It is largest and the most important authentic area of this type in Andalusia. The 5000 years old schematic drawings represent human bodies, with heads or without, animals, men on horses, idols and all were done with red iron oxide paint.

The early inhabitants of this area were farmers and we know for sure they had vast knowledge about the solar cycles marking the west, east, north and south, controlling this way their farming activity. The views from Penas de Cabreras are striking making it a special place for worship and the cross carved in one of the stones is a real proof of the spiritual continuity of this unique place.
Penas de Cabreras is located between the village of Casabermeja and Colmenar, on the right side of A-356 road, behind the ” Cortijo de Cabrera” (Cabrera farmhouse)
