I find it fascinating that only a 100 km away from the sunny beaches of Costa del Sol are over 100 km of slopes of Sierra Nevada, Europe’s Southern most skiing area.

To be honest, with the warm winter it had been so far, I didn’t expect even the 20 slopes that were open to be functional. Thanks to the highly efficient snow cannons they had the slopes topped up with fresh snow. We, of course skied down each and every one of the 20 slopes, making the most of our 40 Euro forfait (ski pass). Sierra Nevada ski resort has it all: a snow park for the little ones, beginners, intermediate and cross country slopes, night skiing and even skiing for the physically challenged visitors. Anyone, beginner or not can ski here, and have fun in the snow. There are quite a few slopes challenging enough for the experienced ones, although if you’re a seeker of black diamonds and off-piste skiing then check the snow conditions before going, as those are only open if its snowed a lot. All the information about the ski resort is available here.

There are loads of bars and restaurants to choose from, something for every pocket and palate. After having our fill of the slopes, when our legs could ski no more, we stopped for a well deserved lunch. The indisputable advantage of skiing in Sierra Nevada and in Spain in general is that you can have lunch at 4 o’clock PM. ‘Tito Tapas” was by far our favorite find, serving generous tapas with your beer or glass of wine while you take your time to look at their innovative Spanish cuisine menu. The food is just out of this world.

I can’t think of any place where it is possible to eat fresh fish from the sea (catch of the day), while sitting in a snow-covered terrace, basking in the afternoon sun, still in your ski gear admiring the winter wonderland.

To end the perfect day we drove down to Granada, just 40 minutes away to admire the sunset over the famous Alhambra castle and fortress.

Andalusía really does have it all… the sunny sandy beaches, the manicured golf courses and the pristine white skiing slopes of Sierra Nevada, oh and of course the stunning Alhambra!
